Building the Final Assessment

What is learned about persevering towards goals from the characters and their actions?

After reading Shoeless Joe, I learned many different things about what happens when you persevere towards your goals. Firstly, goals do not always come easily. You need to work hard and persevere a lot like Ray did when faced with challenges such as single-handedly building a baseball diamond. "Building a baseball field is more work than you might imagine. I laid out the whole field,..." (Kinsella 7). Secondly, you may need some extra help or encouragement along the way to keep you persevering to your goal. Ray had his family, J.D. Salinger and others to encourage him and help him moving towards his many goals. "That afternoon, while others were working on the field with varying degrees of enthusiasm..." (Kinsella 162). Finally, I learned that the outcome of your goal is unpredictable, no matter how much you try to fulfill it. Mark and Bluestein tried extremely hard to get Ray's farm. However, even with their best efforts, they still failed in their pursuit as Ray came up with the money to update his mortgage. "And I think of Gypsy waiting for us, clutching a handful of bills that will act as the cement to keep the stadium solid and permanent as the game it houses." (Kinsella 215). Shoeless Joe is a good representation of the possibilities and outcomes while persevering towards your goals.
